Logo churn vs revenue churn

Logo churn counts customers: what share of your customer base disappeared this month. Revenue churn counts dollars: what share of your MRR disappeared. The formulas look identical โ€” lost รท starting base ร— 100 โ€” but the denominator changes, and that changes everything.

Logo churn % = (Customers lost) รท (Customers at start) ร— 100
Revenue churn % = (MRR lost) รท (MRR at start) ร— 100

where lost = start + new โˆ’ end. You must add back the new customers (and new MRR) before comparing โ€” otherwise new signups mask the losses.

Revenue churn usually matters more to the business, because dollars pay the bills. A 10% logo churn made up of your smallest accounts might be only a 3% revenue churn โ€” a very different problem from losing one customer who was 10% of your MRR. Track both: logo churn diagnoses product and onboarding health, revenue churn diagnoses business health.

Net revenue churn can even go negative. If expansion revenue from existing customers โ€” upsells, cross-sells, added seats โ€” exceeds the revenue lost to churn and downgrades, you grew MRR from the same customer base without adding a single new account.

Worked example

You start the month with 500 customers and $50,000 MRR. During the month you add 40 new customers ($6,000 of new MRR), and end with 480 customers and $52,000 MRR.

Lost customers = 500 + 40 โˆ’ 480 = 60, so logo churn = 60 รท 500 = 12%. Lost MRR = $50,000 + $6,000 โˆ’ $52,000 = $4,000, so revenue churn = $4,000 รท $50,000 = 8%. Net MRR change = $52,000 โˆ’ $50,000 = +$2,000. You churned 12% of your logos yet still grew MRR โ€” new sales outpaced losses.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good churn rate for SaaS?

There is no universal benchmark โ€” it depends on your market, price point and growth stage. Rather than chasing a magic number, track your own trend: a churn rate that falls quarter over quarter is good news at almost any level. Many SaaS businesses aim for low single-digit monthly logo churn and net revenue churn at or below zero, where expansion revenue offsets losses. What matters most is that new customer acquisition can sustainably outpace churn.

What is the difference between logo churn and revenue churn?

Logo churn measures the share of customers you lost; revenue churn measures the share of MRR you lost. Revenue churn usually matters more because it reflects the money actually leaving the business: losing many tiny accounts looks bad in logo churn while barely moving revenue, while losing one large account barely moves logo churn but craters revenue. Track both โ€” logo churn diagnoses product and onboarding health, revenue churn diagnoses business health.

Can revenue churn be negative?

Yes โ€” this is called negative net revenue churn, or net revenue retention above 100%, and it is one of the healthiest signals in SaaS. It happens when expansion revenue from existing customers โ€” upsells, cross-sells, added seats โ€” exceeds the revenue lost to churned and downgraded accounts. You grow MRR from your existing base without adding a single new customer.

Should I measure churn monthly or annually?

Measure churn over the period you report on, but never compare monthly and annual figures directly. Because churn compounds, a steady 3% monthly churn becomes roughly 31% annually โ€” not 36%. Monthly churn is best for spotting trends and reacting quickly; annual churn is what investors and boards usually want to see. Always label the period.

How does churn connect to customer lifetime value (LTV)?

Churn sets the ceiling on customer lifetime: with a constant monthly churn rate c, average customer lifetime is roughly 1 รท c months. At 5% monthly churn the average customer stays about 20 months, so LTV is roughly 20 ร— monthly revenue per customer. Cut churn in half and you roughly double LTV โ€” which is why retention work usually beats acquisition work on return.
